Gallipoli 1915 Centenary of WW1 50c
As British First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill sought to knock Ottoman
Turkey out of the war by having a naval force sail through the Dardanelles and shell
Constantinople from the sea. The poorly planned and executed strategy ended in
disaster. On 18 March 1915, a fleet of British and French warships attempted to force
the Dardanelles but were fired on and damaged from Turkish forts, or else sunk by
sea mines sown across the Narrows. The naval plan failed, forcing allied commanders
to consider a ground operation to gain control of the heights overlooking the
Dardanelles. More than 70,000 allied troops made a number of landings along the
Gallipoli peninsula at first light on 25 April 1915. The British landed at Cape Helles and the French at Kum Kale, while the Australians and New Zealanders made landfall north of Gaba Tepe at what became known as Anzac Cove.
