On 2 September 1945, Japanese officials signed documents formally surrendering to the Allied nations. With Nazi Germany having surrendered in May, the Second World War was over. It had been the deadliest conflict in human history - at least 60 million people had died, including almost 40,000 Australians.
Almost one million Australians served across the world, on land, at sea, and in the air - from the skies over occupied Europe, the waters of the Mediterranean, the deserts of North Africa, and the jungles of New Guinea.
Japanese forces had invaded Australian territory, bombing Northern Australia, and attacking Sydney and Newcastle, bringing the reality of war uncomfortably close to home.
Seventy-five years after the end of the Second World War, we commemorate those who served, and acknowledge the lasting impact that the war had on Australia.
