The Battle of Kapyang (22-23 April 1951) was the most important battle for Australian troops in the Korean War (25 June 1950-27 July 1953). The Korean War was fought between communist-backed North Korea and South Korea, which was supported by United Nations forces, led by USA, with contingents from many countries including Australia. The Australian Army was primarily represented in Korea by the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR).
In April 1951 the communist Chinese forces launched their Spring Offensive with the aim of retaking the city of Seoul. They quickly over ran South Korean forces defending one of the major approach routes, the valley of the Kapyong River. Though vastly out numbered, Commonwealth battalions 3 RAR and the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment (2PPCLI) played the major role in successfully defending the valley, stalling the Chinese advance and preventing Seoul from falling into enemy hands. Australia suffered the most fatalities: 32 men were killed and 53 wounded. Australian and Canadian battalions both received United States Presidential Distinguished Unit Citations for their part in the battle.
