Teams moved quickly to put the sleek new 1968 Holden Monaro on the race track, and Melboume racer Norm Beechey couldn't resist the homegrown two-door coupe.
The HT-series Monaro GTS 350, with its 6.0-litre Chevrolet V8 engine, was cheekily dubbed the "Trans-Aus" Monaro, with reference to its Australian build compared to Moffat's Trans-Am Mustang. Built with covert assistance from the Holden factory, in 1970 it became the first Australian car to win the championship.
